Step 1: Searching for a job in Germany

German is spoken in most companies in Germany and sometimes it is enough if you can speak English. To get a job in Germany, however, it is important that you speak German well. Our German language courses in BWS Germanlingua can help you find your dream job in Germany, especially in big appealing cities like Munich, Berlin and Cologne.

If you don’t yet know which profession you would like to work in, you can get information from a local job centre or online. Alternatively, when you are unsuccessful with your applications, you can do an internship for a job in Germany first. An internship usually lasts a few weeks or months. During an internship, you get to know the job and the company and can try out whether you like the job. After the internship, you may be able to continue working in the company.

Step 2: Finding a job vacancy

There are numerous opportunities to find vacancies:

A first port of call when looking for a job is your local job center (Arbeitsagentur für Arbeit). There you will find information on all professions, a description of the activities in this profession and information on the qualifications required for this profession. Moreover, the staff at the job center can tell you which professions give you a good chance of finding a job in Germany.

There are other job exchanges on the Internet, such as, www.monster.de, www.stepstone.de, Make-it-in-Germany.com. You can create a profile there in which you describe your qualifications and experiences. This can also attract the attention of companies.

If you already know which companies you are interested in, you can search for vacancies directly on the company websites.

Step 3: Applying for a job

Once you have found an interesting job advert, you can apply there. In most companies, you apply in writing – either by post or by email.

A complete application consists of:

  • The letter of application
  • a CV with signature (a photo is optional)
  • your degrees and certificates
  • other related documents.

Many employers select their employees primarily on the basis of their certificates or qualifications. When you have a degree from your country of origin or have gained experience in a profession, you must have this recognised. You can find more information here.

If the company likes your application, you will be invited to an interview. A few days or a week after the interview, you will receive a reply from the company.

Here comes your new journey in Germany!
